Let’s Talk About Your Body

Your Body-How does it feel?

Stop. Now close your eyes. Picture your body in just lingerie. Got it? Now what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? Do you smile or cringe slightly? If you said smile, fantastic! Let’s get you signed up for a boudie shoot today! We definitely can’t wait!

But If you said cringe, which I know some of you did whether you deny it or not, let’s talk for a minute.

What are you seeing that makes you so uncomfortable, and more importantly, why?

Ok, let’s try something else. Take off the lingerie and now picture…. No, not that, put your clothes on!

Got ‘em on? Good. Now remember when you were a kid and you would run as fast as you could? Your legs would pump so hard they felt like they may fall off. And sometimes when you’d get to the finish line you’d collapse in victory or defeat, depending on the day? Never once did you pay attention to how you looked while running. You felt the wind in your hair and the blood coursing through your veins, but how thin your legs looked never even occurred to you.

Then that one day came. When you heard, either towards yourself or someone else, the first negative comment about a body. Whether it was “fatty” or “beanpole” or something in between. That first comment was so much more profound than we could have ever realized. It was the day fat… or skinny…depending, went from a noun to a negative adjective, changing many people’s relationships with the word permanently. But why?

It’s no secret that different body styles and types have been popular in different cultures during different time period. We can look at the Rubinesque paintings of the long past, or the waifish models of the 90’s and see that different things have appealed to different eyes depending on the century, so why are we so hard on ourselves when we don’t fit what we think is acceptable for society?

I say we toss it out the window! Let’s try a new way of looking at ourselves. Close your eyes and get back in your lingerie. I’ll wait over here. No peeking!

Done? Good. Now tell me three things you like about the way you look. (Mentally, since we aren’t in the same room unless you want to email me-then go for it!) Now every single time you start to be too hard on yourself think of yourself in that lingerie, and I want you to picture those three things. Or three different things. Three too hard? Okay, let’s start with one. I don’t care if it’s the way the sun is glinting off a piece of hair that’s sticking out of your chin, give me one single positive that you like about yourself. Once you’ve changed your mindset, you’ll find it easier and easier to love yourself.
