Being a woman of a certain age…one that recalls when Cyndi Lauper was a girl who just wanted to have fun…I have found myself more focused than ever on my skin. In addition to being a cough, cough year-old woman, I’m also a realist. Skin ages. And no matter how many facials or fillers you may choose to get, (no judgement here-live your best life) you eventually can’t fight Father Time or Mother Nature.
That being said, there are certainly things that you can do to help keep your skin healthy, no matter what age you are. Practicing good skincare routines and using products tailored to your age group and skin condition is important to keeping skin hydrated and youthful. Though all skin is unique, knowing some basics tips about what to focus on when it comes to skincare for your age is key.
Teens
Or as I liked to refer to my teen years, “the acne years”. This is where you have to start the habit of washing your skin thoroughly. And learning how to wash. It’s also where you’re introduced to the terrible t-zone. The T-Zone the T extending from your forehead and chin, and the most likely place for pimples to pop (bad pun intended). Focusing on keeping this area clean, sunscreen, and a general moisturizer are a must. I loved the Olay cleanser and found it works great for combination skin. The ingredients haven’t changed much over the years so I would still recommend it.
Now let’s move on to our 20’s, or the “sweet spot”.
There is a good chance, with the right skincare and some luck, that somewhere, in the middle of your twenties, you will have neither pimples or wrinkles. I know, I know, but it’s true. If you’re lucky enough to have this happening currently, book a boudoir shoot stat! Take as many pictures as you can!
But seriously, your twenties is a great time for skin. Making sure you create good habits is important to the longevity of the elasticity of your skin. Whether you choose to do them at home, or opt for a professional, this is a good time to start facials. Adding exfoliators and extra moisturizers to your normal routine will help keep your skin fresh and glowing. Beware of ingredients, though. Using exfoliators with plastic beads or crushed shells can be harsh on your skin and cause extra damage. Talk to a skincare professional if you have questions.
In your 30’s and 40’s things get interesting.
That’s the time when you are lucky enough to get pimples and wrinkles on the same face, AT THE SAME TIME!
Its like a little joke from the universe.
But it’s okay. There are some great products to get you through this rough time. Serums with collagen and vitamin E included are going to become your new best friends. And if you can, now is the time to up your visits to quarterly facials. I also started using Jade rollers regularly during this time to alleviate puffiness and because it feels so nice. Who says beauty must be painful-not I! Also remember the rest of your body, especially your neck and hands, moisturizer and sunscreens are true allies when it comes to keeping that youthful glow.
I, personally, am 50 now, and I haven’t seen much change between today and my forties, but I know it’s coming. Im careful about sun; use the fearsome foursome of cleansing, collagen, vitamin c , and moisturizer daily; eat well and drink lots of water (that will be another post for another day) so I can make my 50’s the new 30’s!
No matter what age you are, your skin is your biggest and most visible organ. It deserves to be cared for, so spoil it a little, and remember-take those pictures!
